Capote, Take 2

Tobycapote_1 I'm usually not one to write about movies I haven't yet seen, but I'm so stirred by the comments of David Thomson and my co-snob, David Kamp, about Infamous, the other Truman Capote movie, that I just have to share them. As a Capote admirer (I've lost count how many times I've read "Handcarved Coffins"), I was disappointed by the Philip Seymour Hoffman vehicle, despite his great performance. And according to Kamp, this new guy is even better:

This is a fantastic film of entirely different energies and qualities than Capote, and its lead performance, by an Englishman named Toby Jones, probably best known in America for supplying the voice of Dobby the Elf in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is so beyond good, beyond kitsch, and beyond mere impersonation that he ought to succeed Hoffman next spring as Best Actor winner.

And here's Thomson:

In Infamous you feel the tragedy. Yes, Truman goes to Kansas with Harper Lee (this time it's Sandra Bullock, and she's superb). He slowly wins the confidence of law and order there. He becomes a famous dinner guest in Holcomb. He meets the killers—Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. And as he starts to write the book, he falls in love with Perry Smith. That was hinted at as a possibility in Capote, though its Truman is hardly capable of love. The ultimate triumph of Infamous is that he is weak enough to need, and that's what ruins him.

I know what you're thinking: Sandra Bullock? Whatever. I can hardly wait.
