It seems I’ve finally gotten over my reluctance to walk out of lousy movies. Last night I tolerated maybe fifteen minutes of Richard Linklater’s latest, A Scanner Darkly, before remembering that real life—free from Keanu Reeves attempting drama and Robert Downey Jr. overdoing his manic schtick—was waiting for me outside the screening room. So I fled, wondering why on earth anyone, particularly the man behind Slacker and Before Sunset, would turn a Philip Dick novel into the kind of brainless acid trip only a teenage stoner could love. It’s as insufferable as Waking Life, but worse, because it tries and utterly fails to be funny.
See for yourself when it comes out July 7. Be sure to sit on the aisle.
